High Point: Mississippi, February 8, 2008

The drive to Memphis was interesting. We saw more green fields, along with swarms of birds.

Mississippi, known for its pineapples…?

More stray dogs. These were hanging out in the shade of a phone booth on the side of a busy road.

Finally, we hit Elvis Presley Boulevard.

We pulled into the parking area for Graceland and wasted $8 here. (I say wasted because we didn’t realize there was a place to pull off the road just in front of the estate since we only wanted photos.) We decided not to go on the tour because it’s $27/person. And I’m not exactly a fan. I couldn’t even name or sing an Elvis song. But here’s what we saw that we didn’t have to pay for.

After looking at the gates of Graceland, we drove into downtown Memphis. We found some parking and took a walk down Beale St and saw the FedEx Forum.

By the time we were through walking, we were getting really hungry, so we decided to take my dad’s advice and find a place called Corky’s for some Memphis style barbeque. It’s about a 10 mile drive down Poplar Ave. away from downtown, toward Germantown. We munched on buttery bread while we waited for our food (and the wait wasn’t long at all). The bread rivals Texas Roadhouse’s bread in yumminess.

Speaking of yumminess, though, the ribs were freaking amazing. We found out this place ships frozen ribs anywhere in the world. (1-800-9-CORKYS.)

Our waitress convinced us that we needed some banana pudding, too.

With our bellies stuffed, we both agreed that Corky’s was the highlight of our trip through Memphis.

From Memphis, we drove 100 miles east to Mississippi’s highpoint, where you can drive right up to the summit and which has nothing more than this block of cement with the USGS marker set in it.

Jesse, I went to a fesitval in Boston last summer for the phantom gourmet and we had ribs from corky’s. They were there representing. Beautiful country. I’d love to see somewhere different. More power to you guys. Hopefully see you back here soon. Bruce is good, though.
