go hike a mountain

For any of our readers that are unaware, Jesse and I have been planning a 2-month road trip for a while now. This last month there was a lot of doubt about whether the trip could actually happen, but we both managed to get time off of work and get our finances in order. We’ll be driving from Massachusetts to Florida and back and hiking a bunch of places in between. We hope to make it to the tops of 17 new high points, including Mt. Mitchell, the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River, and Britton Hill, a mere 385 ft. above sea level in Florida.

Yesterday was my last day of work and Jesse and I spent the evening having dinner with his father and visiting with the rest of his family to give them all gohikeamountain.com t-shirts and to say goodbye (t-shirts for sale are soon to come). We spent the later part of the evening organizing some of the clothes we were packing and trying to gather everything in our living room.

Note: I’m putting lower quality photos up so that our friends with dial-up can still view the site easily. In the next few weeks, I’ll be redoing all of our old posts with these smaller files.

So, here’s a photo of all the crap we hope to be able to squish into our car + roof box. Keep in mind, we’re trying to leave enough room in the back of the car for us to sleep when necessary.

Based on the current weather trend, Jesse and I will probably be leaving this evening to split up the first 540 mile stretch that we were originally planning on doing in one day. Our first stop is Mt. Davis in Pennsylvania which is about an hour east of Pittsburgh. From there, we’ll attempt the highpoints of Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and Arkansas in the first week, stopping in the middle to check out Mammoth Caves in Kentucky.
